The University of Warsaw is Poland’s largest public research institution, established in 1816. It offers a wide range of academic programs, including 37 fields of study and 100 specializations in the humanities, technical fields, and natural sciences. The university is spread across 126 buildings, housing over 18 faculties, including law, biology, economics, and psychology. Among its notable alumni are Nobel laureates like Olga Tokarczuk and Joseph Rotblat, as well as famous historical figures such as Frédéric Chopin and Alfred Tarski.
The university’s history reflects Poland’s political struggles, having been closed twice due to uprisings and significantly impacted during World War II. Despite these challenges, it has grown into one of Poland’s leading institutions. Since Poland’s transition to democracy, the university has continued to expand, adding new facilities and consistently ranking as one of the top universities in the country. Its main campus is located in central Warsaw, with additional campuses dedicated to natural sciences.
