A hundred years in the life of the University of Milan: A history that speaks to your future

Milan University, affectionately called as ‘La Statale’, is one of Italy’s youngest universities. Doctor Luigi Mangiagalli established La Statale in 1924, realizing his long-held dream of building a university in the regional center of Lombardy. Law, Humanities, Medicine, and Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences were the four colleges that comprised the University of Milan when it was formed. Over the years, Milan’s many educational institutions and best schools would become part of the University of Milan. The University, of which Mangiagalli was Rector until 1926, grew steadily until World War Two, with 3,000 students and six faculties (the Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine were added in the 1930s) in Città Studi, home to the scientific faculties, and the historic city center.  Since its founding, the University has focused on transdisciplinary, creative education and new professional skills needed by a rapidly changing labor market. Over time, the University has increased its commitment to technology transfer and economic-production application of scientific research. Recently, a project has been launched to establish a science campus in the Milan Innovation District (MInD), the location of Expo 2015, which will house a prominent research and technology center. In 2022, the University of Milan Board of Directors authorized the final Science Campus project in MIND-Milan Innovation District, which would house the University’s scientific faculties starting in 2026. The final project will rationalize, optimize, and develop research and teaching services and infrastructures to international standards, concentrating the University of Milan’s rich and multidisciplinary scientific offer in one location and enabling its interaction with a strongly innovation-driven ecosystem.
